Yes. At organized fields with masks and velocity limits, injuries are uncommon. The most detailed U.S. study (emergency-room data from 1997–2001, published in Injury Prevention in 2004) found 4.5 ER visits per 10,000 players a year, and about 43% of those injuries were to the eye — which is why a mask rated to the ASTM F1776 paintball standard must stay on at all times. Fields typically cap markers at about 280 fps. Airsoft masks and shooting glasses are not paintball-rated.

Paintball is Safe
When Done Right

Most serious paintball injuries are eye injuries, and masks prevent them. In the most detailed U.S. study, 43% of emergency-room visits were eye injuries, and more happened at or around home (28%) than at paintball fields (26%). [Injury Prevention] These six rules keep play safe.

Wear an ASTM-Approved Paintball Mask

Only a mask rated to the ASTM F1776 paintball standard [ASTM] is safe — it must stay on at all times in active play zones. Airsoft masks and shooting glasses are NOT paintball-approved and will not stop a paintball. A paintball carries far more energy than an airsoft BB and can cause permanent eye injury through inadequate eyewear. Never remove your mask on the field — not to wipe sweat, not to look around. Absolute and non-negotiable.

Barrel Bag in Safe Zones

Cap your marker with a barrel plug or bag whenever you're not on the field. Even with the safety engaged — always cap the barrel. No exceptions, ever.

Respect the Velocity Limit

Fields chronograph markers before play, typically capping them at about 280 fps. [Wikipedia] A hot marker hits harder and isn't allowed on the field. Always verify before you play.

Never Blind Fire

Always see where you are shooting before you fire. Shooting blindly around bunkers risks hitting players at dangerously close range or in restricted areas.

Call Yourself Out Honestly

When you're hit and marked, raise your hand immediately and walk out. The game works on the honor system — cheating invites additional shots and ruins the experience for everyone.

Always Follow Referees

Field referees are there for your safety and the game's integrity. Follow their instructions instantly and without question. When they call "cease fire" — stop immediately.
